GENERAL

INFO.

As an attorney, you will be given an opportunity whenever you file most pleadings to select an additional attorney if you are filing the pleading jointly with another attorney.

In CM/ECF, joint filing is used when you are filing a pleading jointly with another attorney who also represents your client or when you are filing jointly with an attorney who represents another client who is joining in as a party in your pleading.  It is not used for choosing a lot of attorneys from the same law firm who may sometimes file pleadings in the case in your absence or who may sometimes appear in court when you are unable to appear.

Instructions for using or choosing not to use the “Joint filing” option are set out below.

Click the  button to move on to the next screen if you are not filing the pleading jointly with another attorney.

STEP 1

If you are filing the pleading jointly with another attorney, use your mouse to click in the small empty square to insert a check mark into it.

STEP 2

Click the  button.

STEP 3

Then, the “Select any additional attorney(s)” screen will display.  Click on the name of the attorney with whom you are jointly filing the pleading.

NOTE:  You can only choose attorneys who have already filed pleadings previously in the case.  You cannot add new attorneys.  If you are filing jointly with an attorney who does not appear in the attorney list for the case, you would need to discontinue your filing and contact the court.   Court staff will have to add the new attorney to the case first, and then you will be able to select them as a joint filer when filing your pleading.

STEP 4
