Court Operations During Government Shutdown

Tuesday, October 21, 2025

On Sunday, October 19, 2025, the Judiciary exhausted its fee and carry-forward balances, which had allowed it to remain open since the government shutdown began on October 1, 2025.  As a result, all courts must limit certain activities to comply with the Anti-Deficiency Act until Congressionally approved funding is provided. The United States Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Kentucky will therefore furlough its staff and close to the public on Friday, October 24, 2025, and each Friday thereafter until funding is authorized. Emergency filing procedures will remain in place during these closures, and access to the CM/ECF system will not be impacted. Further information about the Judiciary’s funding status may be found here.
